What is Read Across America?
Read Across America is a nationwide initiative launched by the National Education Association (NEA) to promote the joy and importance of reading. Celebrated annually on March 2, in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, this event unites communities across the country to encourage children to develop a lifelong love of books.
At United Way Monterey County (UWMC), we recognize that early literacy is the foundation for future success. Research shows that children who are exposed to reading at an early age develop stronger language skills, perform better academically, and are more likely to succeed later in life. Unfortunately, not all children have equal access to books and reading support. That’s where you come in!
Why Volunteers Matter
Your participation in Read Across America goes beyond simply reading a book—it’s about inspiring young minds, fostering curiosity, and making a lasting impact on a child’s education. When you volunteer to read to children, you:
- Bring stories to life, sparking imagination and creativity.
- Serve as a role model, showing kids that reading is fun and valuable.
- Support early literacy efforts, which are key to academic achievement.
- Make a difference in your community, helping to close the literacy gap.
Through Read Across America, we aim to create a community of readers where every child has the opportunity to develop strong literacy skills. Your time and enthusiasm can change a child’s perspective on reading—helping to build a brighter future, one book at a time.
Join us in making an impact! Sign up to volunteer and be part of this meaningful movement.
