Help kids thrive, one classroom at a time
Be a part of the Monterey County Preschool Service Corps and experience
the power of early learning, community service, and career development coming together
What is the Preschool Service Corps?
United Way Monterey County’s Preschool Service Corps (PSC) is an AmeriCorps program that places trained members into preschool classrooms across the county. Members serve as language and literacy tutors, helping young learners build strong foundations for lifelong success.
After a temporary pause, the program is resuming for the 2025–2026 service year. PSC offers a powerful two-way impact: children thrive in language and literacy development, and members gain professional skills, experience, and community connection.
Why this matters
In Monterey County, nearly 75% of children enter kindergarten behind in language and literacy skills. The earliest years of life are critical for brain development, but many families face barriers to high-quality early learning experiences.
PSC closes this gap by providing consistent, play-based tutoring that nurtures curiosity, communication, and confidence in preschoolers.
We believe every child deserves the chance to start school ready to learn—and every community member deserves the opportunity to be part of the solution.

History of AmeriCorps
In 1993, President Bill Clinton signed the National and Community Service Trust Act, which established the Corporation for National and Community Service and brought the full range of domestic community service programs, including AmeriCorps, under the umbrella of one central organization. On July 3, 2003, President Bush signed the Strengthen AmeriCorps Program Act, which nearly doubled the number of AmeriCorps members. Over 1 million members have contributed more than 1.4 billion hours in service to meet our nation's most critical needs.
AmeriCorps is a nationally-funded service initiative implemented within local community nonprofits to address critical community needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members are direct service providers.
Before beginning their service with AmeriCorps, members commit to upholding the AmeriCorps Pledge:
I will get things done for America - to make our people safer, smarter and healthier.
I will bring Americans together to strengthen our communities.
Faced with apathy, I will take action.
Faced with conflict, I will seek common ground.
Faced with adversity, I will persevere.
I will carry this commitment with me this year and beyond.
I am an AmeriCorps member and I will get things done.
